The tooth fairy finally came to our house last night, leaving behind a very tiny pink note and a $1 bill.
It was a well-earned dollar. As many of my (five) readers already know, Amelia's permanent teeth have been coming in for more than a month. After googling and asking the Facebook world about this (previously unknown-to-me) phenomenon, I discovered this is a fairly common situation known as "shark teeth." Apparently 10% of all kids have permanent teeth that start coming in before the baby ones fall out. Something about the baby tooth roots not being totally dissolved and so the new teeth take the path of least resistance. Some websites say to wait it out and see what happens, others favor intervention and advocate having a dentist pull the baby teeth so the new ones can move into the correct spot more quickly. After asking our dentist about it and getting a wishy washy answer, we decided to go with the conservative method and wait and see, especially since the baby teeth were getting wiggly. Finally, our patience has been rewarded. Now let's just hope those permanent teeth indeed make their way forward or we are looking at some serious orthodontist bills in our future.
