We have a lot of action going on in our yard this spring. After being in this house almost a year and beginning our second lawn-mowing season here, we decided it was time to get rid of the grassy slope in the front yard (a total beast to mow and not good for much other than the occasional sledding) and define our backyard grassy space a little better with beds around the edges. Our landscaper helped us make a ($10,000!) plan, and then we pared it way down. For now, we're just doing mulching -- a LOT of mulching (the above picture is probably 1/4 the size of the original pile and we're getting an additional 6 cubic yards on Monday!) -- and adding a variety of deer-proof plantings in the front bed. Eventually our backyard and slope mulch beds will house new flowers and plants and ground cover, but for now they are just helping us spend more time together and less time mowing the lawn.
During all the planning stages, we also had been trying to decide if we should take down our split Bradford Pear tree in the backyard. But during a particularly windy storm a couple weeks back, Mother Nature took care of it for us. I thought the kids would be really sad to lose one of their favorite trees (they call it the Lollipop Tree because of the little long-stemmed fruits) but they were thrilled to watch it get cut up by the chainsaw. Amelia was even excited by the prospect of a stump. I have to love preschoolers' simple pleasures!
Before and After pictures to come...
